Purple Coneflower Pops Up in Mid June

Sometimes you throw some seed in the garden and just cross your fingers. Well, that’s what I do sometimes, and about 2 years ago that’s what I did with a packet of Purple Coneflower. I forgot about the poor seeds, and I just assumed the seeds weren’t viable. But last year about 4 individual plants appeared, scattered willy-nilly in the garden. When I first saw them I thought they were weeds and almost pulled them out. I wisely decided to use iNaturalist to determine what they were. I let them be and within a few months I had those iconic coneflowers blooming beautifully.

So, all this to say, this year’s batch is starting to show up. I don’t yet have pictures of the insects that are doing the pollinating, but I certainly have my camera at the ready. Photos to come soon!

This pretty bloom is certainly welcome, especially considering its the start of Pollinator Week 2025.
