Butterfly and Moth Stats

In my yard, I have documented 86 species of lepidoptera (butterflies, skippers, moths). I think that we often forget that moths are pollinators just like bees, butterflies, and wasps. Moths just tend to do their work at night.

Moths are pollinators too!

Not all moths are nighttime pollinators, though. For example, this Yellow-collared Scape Moth was found at 5:30 PM, flitting around the flowers.

Then there is this lovely Polka-dot Wasp Moth (Syntomeida epilais) that floats in your garden and loves sweet almond bush and yellow top.

There is also this adorable Ornate Bella Moth (Utetheisa ornatrix ) that I found resting calmly on a leaf at 5:52 PM in July.

So, let’s not forget about the adorable and gentle moths. There are 12000 species of moths (that we know of) in North America and only 825 species of butterfly. When you’re developing your pollinator garden, give a thought to the many glorious moths who may come visit.
