Long-tailed Skipper Overtakes Blue Lake Beans

I want pumpkins, so I decided to grow some Jack O Lantern pumpkins from seed I got at High Mowing Organic Seeds. We have sandy, nitrogen deficient soil so I planted some Blue Lake Beans alongside the pumpkins for extra oomph. I never planned on eating the pumpkins or the beans.

Well, a few days ago I noticed some of my bean leaves were disappearing and curling. I opened one of the curled leaves and was surprised to find a new friend. Say hello to the Long-tailed Skipper!

I did some more searching and found some eggs too. The picture documents the progress of the eggs over the course of 3 days.

It’s a good thing I never planned on eating the beans. I doubt there will be anything left for me. My garden is 1) an insect garden, 2) a garden for ornamental and potentially edible fruits and veggies. But it is first for the insects. I just hope I can get a pumpkin or two before some moth or skipper takes up residence.
