I’ve got 7 black swallowtail caterpillars on fennel and 6 on dill. I have 1 caterpillar on dill in a butterfly tent so that I can watch closely and take pictures of one individual.
The caterpillars on dill have been steadily eating the flowering dill. I’m wondering if this will have any impact on the color of the butterflies. Does eating mostly the bright yellow flowers impact stripes or markings in any way? Do caterpillars raised solely on dill look different from those raised on fennel?
