I created a seriously DIY moth trap yesterday out of a 5 gallon bucket, a dog e-collar and a clamp light socket. I also had some cardboard stuffed inside the bucket so insects would have some places to chill out while trapped.
I managed to collect a couple of interesting things:
A lacewing

An antlion

Many winged ants, some beetles, and 4 moths.
It wasn’t the windfall I had hoped for, but it was a first pass. I’m still working on identifying the moths. I’m trying to do this without the help of iNaturalist so that I’m forced to flip through my new Peterson Field Guide to Moths of Southeastern North America.
